The rivalry of German luxury brands, Mercedes-Benz and BMW is getting fiercer in Korea.

Based on the KAIDA’s report of new registration of imported cars in August, BMW’s 3,216 units outstripped Mercedes-Benz’s 3,067 units.

Mercedes-Benz sales in July registered 3,349 units, just 4 units less than BMW’s 3,353 units, and in August the gap was widened by 149 units.

The accumulated sales upto August this year show bigger deviation by 3,776 units between the two competitors, as BMW and Mercedes-Benz sold 26,834 units and 23,058 units, respectively.

However, the break-down of the August number shows different account.

The sales number based on Mercedes-Benz’s retail sales account exceeds that of BMW’s by over 3,500 units, as the month-end sales have not been registered and so carried forward to September.

However, it may not be simply concluded that Mercedes-Benz exceeded BMW in August as the sold-but-unregistered number of BMWs must also be counted in.

When the quantity in the pipeline shall be taken into account for both brands, the actual numbers will be very close.

In particular, Benz-Korea supplied at the end of August some 2,000 units of its mainstay E class in the local market, and so when the carry-forward numbers are counted in, the total registration in September will outnumber 4,000 units.

For the latter half of 2014, Benz-Korea set a sales target of 3,500 units per month, for which they are aggressively marketing by adding three or four more outlets within the year.

Recently Benz-Korea has designated the Class Hyosung as a new dealer in Cheonan city, and the dealers in Jeju and Incheon will be also nominated sooner or later.
