Foreign car importers who didn’t pass fuel efficiency requirements last month are preparing to rebut the test results of MOTIE(Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy).

According to MOTIE and importers, the former has proposed an open discussion on the uncompromising fuel economy at L Tower in Yangjae, Seoul at 2:00pm on July 25th.

The debate was organized by the oder of Minister of MOTIE to settle down the importers’ complaints on the test results of government agencies. In the meeting, the importers concerned, such as Chrysler Korea, Audi-VW Korea, and BMW Korea, as well as professors and experts, and four test authorities including KPETRO(Korea Petroleum Quality & Distribution Authority), KATECH(Korea Automotive Technology Institute), and also NGOs like Seoul YMCA will participate.

Deputy Director Jae-Chul Oh of Energy Management Cooperation Section at MOTIE said that “The discussion will be held in order to hear about importers and experts’ opinions on the test methods.”

Both BMW Korea and Audi-VW Korea will invite engineers from German head offices, while Chrysler Korea is reviewing any legal actions against the fuel efficiency issues in cooperation with the legal team of Asia-Pacific HQ in Shanghai.

Beforehand, MOTIE released the 2013 confirmation test results on 33 car models, comprising 20 Korean models and 13 import models, on 26th last month, and reported that four import car models – Audi’s A4 2.0 TDI, VW’s Tiguan 2.0 TDI, Chrysler’s Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mini’s Cooper Countryman – do not comply with relevant requirements.

Chrysler Korea and BMW Korea argued that “The government’s overruling the test results done by the government agencies is incomprehensible, and importers’ repetitive requests of re-test were completely denied by the government.”

So, they submitted their head offices’ test results to the government. Especially Audi and VW who got re-certifications this time asked re-investigation on the big deviation of dual test results by KECO(Korea Environment Corporation) and KATRI, but rejected.
