As if controlling a toy truck by a remote controller, you can maneuver forward or backward a behemoth trailer of over 15 meter in height through finger-tip movement on a tablet.

The innovation truck, developed by ZF, a German axle and transmission producer, is integrated with state-of-the-art IT technologies.

ZF held a ‘2014 International Trade Press Conference’ on July 8th at its test driving center in Aachen, Germany, and introduced the innovation truck, a new generation commercial transmission, TRAXON, a 40kg lighter weight axle, enhanced electronic power steering and damping, etc.

The innovation truck is equipped with high technologies, such as traction hybrid transmission and electronic steering technology, inverter, control units, etc., and the six cameras and sensors at the cap and trailer make it possible to control the truck within the range of 30 meters through a tablet.

The system makes it possible to move the trailer forward or backward by a finger-tip on the tablet without a driver.

Furthermore, bluetooth connection is possible to get information on the tablet the cargo loading status and the contents of the cargos.

The tablet screen also can detect any pedestrians in the front or back of the truck.

Tomas Rosch, Executive Director for openmatics explained that “Driver-less system is imminent for commercial vehicles like trucks” and “ZF is actively introducing new technologies that can be applied to various vehicle parts in convergence with IT.”

The technologies have not yet applied at the mass-produced vehicles, but ZF is planning to commercialize them with any potential makers.

The eye-catching new technology shown at the ‘2014 International Trade Press Conference’ is the next-generation transmission TRAXON for commercial vehicles.

The TRAXON which replaces the incumbent AS Tronics in 10 years is characterized with enhanced torque with 12-speed dual-clutch transmission, and especially hybrid system and PTO-fittable modularization.

The basic 12-speed TRAXON is praised for smooth shifting of gears from 10-speed to 12-speed.

The new transmission will be supplied to the global market from early next year.

ZF is confident of its functional superiority compared with other competitive products like Volvo 1-Shift.

In addition to the TRAXON, ZF has introduced a new Eco-shift, the successor of Eco-light.

The Eco-shift has superior function with little shift shock, and is to be applied to Hyundai Unibus, Kia Granbird, Daewoo bus, etc. from next January in order to comply with EURO 6 standards.

Also, the inverter hybrid transmission, electric batteries, low floor axle, inverter, control units, electronic power steering, light weight axle(less 40kg in weight with use of aluminium material), damping control CDC, etc. have been also introduced.

ZF has its head office in Friedrichshafen, Germany and is the 9th largest global supplier, specializing in major parts of powertrain, such as transmission and chassis, axle, steering, etc.
