The consumers’ responses to the US truck Navistar that was launched last February for the first time in Korea is unexpectedly chill.

According to Chunji International, the wholesale of Navistar in Korea, the total sales of Navistar trucks are merely 10 units as it went on sale since last March.

A spokesperson at Chunji said that “Currently total number of Navistar on roads is just 10 units, and 5 units are contracted per month on average.”

Chunji International is headquartered at Yesan, Chungnam and has 10 sales outlets at Pusan, Pohang, Dangjin, Jecheon, Suncheon, etc.

He added that “During next month additional 10 units will be delivered, and further increase is expected in future, but monthly sales should be over 30 units in order to cover the costs for dealers and sales persons.

Navistar is the first US truck that is introduced last February at Seoul Hyatt Hotel, where US Ambassador Sung Kim attended and drew big attention.

The Prostar introduced in Korea by Navistar is not a cab-over type that is popular in Korea, but a conventional type (engine room is extruded forward), and so such a new type drew interest from truck industry.

Prostar is equipped with a 474-hp Big Bore engine and ultrashift plus 13-speed automatic transmission, and has a sufficient space with a sleeping room in the cab, and fuel economy is 9% better than European trucks, standing at 4.0km per liter.

And the retail price is 174.9 million won, 9 million won cheaper than its competitive model, Volvo truck, priced at 183.8 million won.

However, the current response in the market makes it hard to achieve this year’s turnover target of 5 million dollars.
